Main Features

This popular hike offers stunning views of the Sterkspruit Falls, which plunge over 30 meters into a gorge lined with yellowwood trees and Chi-chi bushes. The area is filled with ferns, moss-coated forest waste, and crystal-clear pools. The established viewpoint provides the best views of the falls.

Description

The hike begins near the entrance of the camping area at Monk’s Cowl Office. The first 200 meters pass through dense bush and then open up at a split in the path. Note this junction, as you will return to it later. Turn right towards Sterkspruit Falls and follow a well-defined path to a fence 100 meters further. Go through the stile and follow the path, which descends gradually towards the Sterkspruit River. Along the way, you will pass a tarn on your left, which is filled with water lilies in summer but dries up in winter.

Continue downhill for about 300 meters until the spectacular Sterkspruit Falls comes into sight. At the T-junction near the falls, turn right to reach the viewpoint, a steep 30 meters down. After enjoying the view, return to the previous T-junction.

From here, you can either turn left to retrace your steps or follow the alternative circular route back. To take the alternative route, go straight at the T-junction. The path skirts a hill on your left and leads to another stile. After passing through the stile, you will reach a junction. Turn left and follow the path uphill for 100 meters to another T-junction. Turn left again, and a clear path with erosion barriers will lead you to a pedestrian gate in the fence. Go through the gate and turn sharp right. Three hundred meters further, you will return to the stile and junction where the hike began. From here, follow the route back to the office and parking area.

NOTES:

  • The established paths crisscrossing this area make navigation an adventure. As long as you stay on the camp’s side of the Sterkspruit River, your chances of getting lost are very slim. All paths eventually lead back to the starting point.
  • Enjoy the scenic gorge filled with lush vegetation and crystal-clear pools.
  • The hike offers a chance to spot local wildlife, including the beautiful Malachite kingfisher.
