Main Features

The Tugela Gorge hike is a relatively flat trail, making it accessible to many hikers despite its length. The trail follows a well-defined path along the side of the mountain, next to the Tugela River, all the way to the Gorge and back. The route is known for its stunning landscapes, lush forests, protea bushes, and spectacular views of the bright blue rock pools near the Gorge.

Description

To reach the start of the Tugela Gorge trail, drive into Royal Natal National Park and park at the Thendele Camp parking lot. At the parking lot, you’ll find a large board displaying a map of all the trails in the park. The beginning of the hike is clearly marked with a sign.

About a kilometer into the hike, you will cross a bridge. Shortly after, you’ll see the eroded sandstone pillar known as Policeman’s Helmet. Continue along the path, which weaves in and out of lush forests and protea bushes.

After approximately 6 kilometers, the trail enters the riverbed of the Tugela. You will walk along the river for a couple of kilometers until you reach the Gorge. The last stretch before the Gorge is particularly stunning, offering views of bright blue rock pools.

At the Gorge, you have two options: walk through the gorge itself or take the chain ladder on the right-hand side to continue the trail to the base of Tugela Falls. During the rainy season, it is dangerous to wander through the gorge, and it is highly recommended to use the chain ladder.

Notes

  • Although the trail is long, it is not strenuous, with relatively flat terrain throughout. The primary challenge is the distance.
  • The trail is quite popular and can be busy, unlike the quieter trails at Giants Castle.
  • During the rainy season, avoid walking through the gorge due to the risk of flash floods.
  • The trail is marked, but always stay on the path to protect the natural environment.
